► (s. XVIII) Escritor británico. Publicó en Gran Bretaña el primer libro ilustrado para niños: El lindo librito de bolsillo.

(1713, Waltham St. Lawrence, Berkshire, Inglaterra –22 dic. 1767, Londres).

Editor inglés, impulsor de la literatura infantil. En 1744 estableció en Londres una librería y casa editorial que sería una de las primeras en publicar libros para niños, entre ellos A Little Pretty Pocket-Book [Un hermoso librito de bolsillo] y Little Goody Two-Shoes [El pequeño y magnífico Dos Zapatos]. En 1781 su editorial publicó la primera colección de versos infantiles asociados a la figura de Mamá Ganso. En su memoria, y desde 1922, se entrega anualmente la Medalla Newbery con la que la Asociación de Bibliotecas de EE.UU. distingue la contribución más valiosa a la literatura infantil de ese país. El galardón se entrega junto con la Medalla Caldecott (ver Randolph Caldecott), que premia al mejor libro ilustrado para niños.
